"section mismatch" warnings building kernel modules

  there may be some important things i'm overlooking here but, just as
an experiment, i'm trying to build the latest stock kernel (2.6.17.9)
for my fully-updated FC5 system.

  as a config file starting point, i'm just using
config-2.6.17-1.2174_FC5 (that came with the latest kernel update) and
running "make oldconfig". then i'm running:

  $ make vmlinuz
  $ make modules

that second make generates a number of "Section mismatch" warnings.
is there an explanation of this somewhere online?  thanks.
