To reply to my own message, it seems the problem lies in the line alias eth1 3c501 which is auto-added to /etc/modprobe.conf when the 3com card is inserted. Changing this to alias eth1 prism54 solves the problem. Now I'm not sure what is actually generating that line? udev? pcmciautils? hal? Jonathan
