Just reformmating the thing ext3 would work

mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdX1

if that fails try just /dev/sdX

tail -f /var/log/messages

and insert the drive to find out what letter X should be.  Be sure you 
don't use, say, sda when sda is your internal SATA drive for example!
