Hi all,
I can't get FC5 or FC6 2.6.18 kernels to work on my Dell Poweredge
1500sc system. I get a kernel panic, and a message about "not syncing".
(Sorry for the vagueness, the error messages zoom past, and making the
system work has been the priority rather than crashing it again).
It worked fine with 2.6.17 kernels. There is a Dell/Adaptec SCSI array
in the server, using software RAID.
Does this ring a bell for anyone?
I'll try to get a better error message, when the server is available for
crash tests again...

I've got /var on a separate filesystem. Since I've upgraded to FC6, I've
discovered that the space is not adequate to support the FC6 updates. Two
questions:
1. Can someone give me a estimate on how large this filesystem should
be?
2. How can I add space to a standard ext3 filesystem?
I realize that the initial update will require the most space, so a
temporary increase would be the best.

thanks a lot for your attention and precision.
My following remark is absolutely not personal and I really do not want to
start any flame here (I'm a Linux + KDE lover...) but ...arghhh... is it
really so complicated (what / where is '--enable-add-ons=kflashpart' ?) to
have a web browser with a ready-to-go Flash support nowadays ?
Or maybe I lost some tricky license around Flash which avoid any decent use
under Linux ?
So (here I'm trying my last chance...) is there any web browser I can use with
a 'ready-to-go' Flash support ?

I discovered this procedure, but it has a serious drawback:
wpa_supplicant does not work if you unload and reload ipw2200 module.
This is not important when wpa is not necessary.
Vice versa, wpa_supplicant works if you use ifrename.

Could this be an selinux problem? I know on a couple of my systems I've
had to disable SELinux because of panic's like that.

Which seems to have been pretty well hidden, so far all I've found are the
src rpms. The .bin installer I have, unpacked even. But yum can't find
the -fc .xml's for fc6 because nothing newer than fc4 is available. So I
disabled that repo in order for yumex to proceed.
The only likely looking candidate is in non-free, and is labeled:
java-1.5.0-sun-compat-1.5.0.09.jpp-noarch
which claims to be the jpackage compatibilty for suns jdk of the same
version number. Unforch, its 1.5.0.10 I have the .bin for.
I'm going to grab it with yum and see what it might be.
But that's not going to fly:
Missing Dependency: jdk = 2000:1.5.0_09-fcs is needed by package
java-1.5.0-sun-compat
And I don't believe this package is available as the fc5 & fc6 listings
aren't even there when I look at the mirrors. What are we going to have
to do, wait 2 years before OpenJava gets mature enough to use?

First, you might want to see where the space is being consumed and see
if there isn't some worthless stuff there...for example, I believe that
until FC-5, it was standard for yum to 'cache' all the update rpm's
which could take up a lot of space. You might want to try 'yum clean
cache' or 'yum clean all' to see if that frees up some space.
To see where the space is being consumed, try 'du -sh /var/*'
In answer to your questions...
1. it depends upon what you are doing on the system.
MySQL & PostgreSQL store their data in /var/lib
Apache will use /var/www/
Various mail programs will use /var/spool
There is no single best answer to question 1
2. LVM allows you to add another drive or change partition sizing. I am
gathering though that you have hard partitioned and not used LVM.
Sometimes you can get away with bind mounting where there is space to
another place where there isn't much space. For example, presume that I
have space in /home that I can yield and I have a lot of data
in /var/spool/mail that I would like to relocate...
mkdir /home/mail
mv /var/spool/mail /var/spool/mail-old
mkdir /var/spool/mail
cp -av /var/spool/mail-old /home/mail
mount --bind /home/mail /var/spool/mail
should sort of work (I'm doing this off the top of my head).
Once you have this working and your data is available, then you could
delete /var/spool/mail-old and add the bind mount to /etc/fstab

I found there is a utility called nvidia-settings. If you run that in
single screen mode, and ask it for a double screen configuration, it
produced a very different xorg.conf file from the one I had. This one
works OK. So, problem solved, but I have no idea why the previous
xorg.conf file works without problems under FC5.

you can interpret my reply any way that you wish I would suppose but
given the information presented in the question, I am certain that it
was an appropriate and helpful answer.
I agree that you clarified your problem 4 hours later - probably after
getting a number of replies from others who were similarly unable to
deduce what you were trying to accomplish any more than I could.
The follow up post to which you are replying here was a reply to Kurt
Wall. It had no consideration about what you intended to do with
libdvdcss as that clearly is none of my concern. It wasn't directed
towards you at all so the inferences that you have drawn concerning your
activities were clearly your own.
If I had a complaint to make about your questions/posting, they would be
about being vague and not specific and the fact that you seem to find it
too easy to merely ask the list the questions that get asked at least
every other week and don't bother searching the archives - just like
your follow up questions about rebuilding rpm db. I would expect that
someone who has been on the list as long as you have and using RHL/FC as
long as you have, that you would know how to ask specific questions and
demonstrate what research that you have done to solve the problem.

All,
I have been looking around for information on how to get my Dlink
DBT-120 ver 4 Bluetooth usb adapter to work with FC6. I have seen one
posting that says it works. Despite the one reference I am having
problems with the device being seen on my laptop.
Prior to using FC6 it worked fine in FC5 and I was able to do DUN with
my Treo 650. The device still shows the power and link likes but as far
as I can tell no joy.
The first place I looked prior to dealing with the Bluetooth issue was
if I could see the USB device. I do not see the device when I use
'lsusb'. Below is the output from .config parsed for both USB settings
and then for the Bluetooth, output from "lspci -v". One last thing the
usb subsystem is able to mount and read/write to usb thumb drives, usb
hard drives and external usb DVD drive with no problem.
