 FWIW - I installed using Stanton's instructions some time ago. The test page 
indicates I have 1.5.0_09 - on my system, using Firefox (current version from 
Fedora repos). I get the pointy headed  red nose dancer, and no prompts to 
update to Java 1.6 -
