How to install a Laptop?

Well not how, but what do I have to know to do the install.
Are there special packages to take care of 'suspending' the Laptop
when I close the cover or push the 'suspend' button'

Ive seen some references to these things being in the Gnome interface
but a quick examination hasnt turned them up.  Are they there somewhere
that I didnt notice (on a desktop), or is it because I havent loaded the 
correct
packages.

I just want some info to save me some time when I do the install
tomorrow.
