what's running check4updates?

Hmmm, I think I found the culprit:

Dec  5  2005       0check4updates

$ rpm -qf /etc/cron.daily/0check4updates
atrpms-67-2.at

$ rpm -qi atrpms

[...]
This package contains auxilary tools and files for atrpms packages. It
contains

daily update tools.
[...]

As seems to happen regularly with AT RPMs, it is broken., at least
under FC6. So...

# sudo rpm -e atrpms

I am also removing smart; although it faster than yum it isn't as reliable.
