dhcp trouble - solved by powering down the modem

It is very common for DSL and cable modems to remember the MAC
address they gave the lease to, and not to work with any other NIC
untill ether power-cycled, or the lease expires. Some even require
your ISP tell the modem to accept a new NIC. This is the reason for
the "clone" option on a lot of firewall/routers.
