No sound with kernel 2.6.15-1.1831_FC4

After installing kernel 2.6.15-1.1831_FC4 (same with 2.6.15-1.1830_FC4)
I don't manage to get the sound to work.

/etc/modprobe.conf is the same and "lsmod | grep snd" gives same output
as with older, working kernels, so modules are loaded correctly
(snd-emu10k1).

system-config-soundcard finds the audio device and reports no errors; no
test sound though.

/usr/bin/gnome-volume-control however reports "No volume control
elements and/or devices found"

Maybe this is the most interesting error output, from /usr/bin/alsamixer :

"ALSA lib simple_none.c:1216:(simple_add1) helem (MIXER,'Front Playback
Volume',0,0,0) appears twice or more

alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument"

Any advices how to solve this is much appreciated.

Rgds
Georg
