FC4 won't come up (X problem?)

Not many, but could it be that something related to X was updated? Or is 
this one of the cases where the X driver uses special kernel support 
(possibly via a separate module) for the graphics card?

Maybe switching to the "vesa" driver for test purposes is a good idea. 
Boot in single user or level 3, open /etc/X11/xorg.conf in editor, 
locate the Driver line and replace "mga" or whatever the Matrox driver 
is called these days, with "vesa", save, then go to level 5...
