Log on shutdown not shown

There is an option in the /etc/grub.conf file added to the kernel which 
hides the shutdown messages. Remove the quiet option from the kernel 
line. (Usually after the rhgb entry.)
I dislike the blanked screen also. You could press any key
on the keyboard to display the messages also.
