1) Memtest86 should tell you if it is a memory issue (The one real
memory problem I have had in over 10 years was identified that way).
2) Have you tried booting from a CD such as knoppix or the rescue CD to
see if it may be filesystem issues?
I have not had any problems with the 1831 kernel but YMMV.
