sound problem after updating to kernel-2.6.15-1.1831_FC4

well i rebooted into the new kernel and logged into console mode. at
console mode sound works fine. but if i log into either KDE (my default)
or GNOME sound does not work. so this must be a conflict between the
newer kernel and the KDE or GNOME sound systems. any ideas?
