what is the grub step?!

 would try this which is simple.
 grub> root(hd0,0)  <- the second zero may be 1, 2, ... dependong
 where the linux is.  
 grub> setup (hd0)
 grub> quit

 Then reboot and all should be fine as long as you grub.conf is
 correct.
