MD5 Hash

Hello all,
I searched for this but did not find anything useful. Here is what i
want to do:

I want to make a passwd file in /etc/test that has MD5 hashes of a
username and password (user:MD5hash).

Can anyone direct me to docs.  I know passwd does this but is it
restricted to just the system password file?? If not what is the syntax
of the command.
