Steve, you're actually correct. There is an mii-tool command (and an
mii-diag), you just forgot the dash. ;-)
[root at circe ~]# mii-tool eth0
eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok
[root at circe ~]# mii-diag eth0
