If the machine has a floppy drive, get yourself a floppy made on a
Windows machine using the "Make System Disk" option (right click the
floppy drive on Windows, select Format, check off the System Disk
box).  Boot your Linux machine with it and run "fdisk /mbr".  That
should clear up the problem.
