Cannot Login!

I installed a newly downloaded FC-4.
I installed the latest updates, but not the extras.
I have my init level set to 3, and I use startx.
I worked for a while.
I locked the KDE session but when I tried to unlock it,
it would not to it.  It said that I had to stop something manually.
I did a cold boot.
I can't login at all.

Any suggestions other than reinstalling.
