Alsa conf files

 Noticing all those nice files in /etc/alsa  which have names like front, back, right front, etc... is there a way  to use two sound cards for a quasi-surround sound or quad setup??
  It all seems to be there, just no explaination in the docs nor a nice  gui to deal with it. Anyone dink with alsa to this point?? Thanx for  any considerations, Ric
