Correct, which may well include your remote system if it responds
correctly to broadcast pings.

If it were me, I'd start with
nmblookup <hostname>

and move on to:
ping -b <broadcast address>
arp -a

then, if all else fails:
tcpdump -nv ether src <MAC address>

and wait for packets to appear. This assumes you are on the same logical
wire.
