Mouse dysfunctional in Konsole/gnome-terminal and Midnight Commander

My mouse, when running inside a Konsole or gnome-terminal (both under
KDE), does not work properly with Midnight Commander. Using the mouse
simply results in semi-random characters appearing on the mc command line.

A google search suggested that the problem is that mc was not compiled
with --with-x (which I confirmed from the source RPM). However,
rebuilding the source RPM after modifying the SPEC file to replace
--without-x with --with-x did not fix the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this and have a solution?
