becauase both directories are defined as active in the default
configuration for autofs:
/etc/auto.master
which references
/etc/auto.net
/etc/auto.misc

useful on multiple user systems on large unix-y networks with nfs
shares. Marginally less useful on desktop oriented systems with
primarily a single user logged in at one time.
