Quite the contrary, it seems to me, rading it, that what he is saying is
to use rpm packages of them, rather than the ones straight from the
vendor -- Why? because the ones straight from the vendor do strange
things to the system that cause breakage, so if you have to have the
driver, use a packaged version of it.

It's clearly not so much a warning AGAINST proprietary video drivers, as
it is a warning ABOUT them.
