Gmail works fine with Evolution or other pop mailers. Follow the
instructions here:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/topic.py?topic=1555
to configure pop access and use authenticated smtp over ssl
to send. You can configure gmail to archive a copy when you
download via pop so you can delete your copy after reading
and still be able to go back with the web interface to search
old messages - very handy.
