Depending on how your network is set up, this may or may not be a useful
test.

Why do you assume that? As suggested, check the man page, which for this
particular program is quite well written -- easy to read and helpful. An
excerpt:

   Filtered means that a firewall, filter, or other network obstacle is
   blocking the port so that Nmap cannot tell whether it is open or closed.
