If grub doesn't work, I don't see how you can lose anything 
by re-installing it.
I would say "grub-install --recheck /dev/hda" 
(assuming you are using hda).

Incidentally, if you are running FC-5,
why not try running the first CD in rescue mode
(answer "linux rescue" to the boot prompt)?
