Sorry, Bruce, but you insult your mother.  My husband is the complete 
technophobe.  Under windows all he could do was use Mozilla to browse the web 
and to email, and play patience.  He's been using linux for the past 2 years, 
and he still browses, sends emails, though by kmail these days, and plays 
patience.

Novice users soon settle.  It's windows power users that have problems 
adjusting.  They forget that they got that way over a long period of time, 
and were just as helpless when they first started.

Having said that, if I were giving it to your mother I'd want to have the 
applications set up and configured to exactly what she'd want to do with it, 
before handing it over.
