vsftpd - disable PAM

I've got an issue with vsftpd using PAM.  When a user tries to login, the
following is logged in /var/log/messages:

Jul 16 19:16:54 mars pam_winbind[11076]: request failed, but PAM error 0!
Jul 16 19:16:54 mars pam_winbind[11076]: internal module error (retval = 3,
user = `ftp')

How can I either fix this issue or disable PAM from vsftpd and let it just
use /etc/passwd?
