No gnome desktop

Dear friends,

When I log into my computer, I do not see the Fedora Desktop, but a very 
simple X-windows like desktop. The problem began whe I did the following:

  1. I was running FC4 normally. I tried to do an upgrade using
     yum-extender; the upgrader quit because a mozilla library was missing.
  2. I removed mozilla and its dependencies from my system.
  3. I re-installed mozilla. When I rebooted, the gnome desktop was gone.
  4. I upgraded to FC5. Everything went fine, except that once more I
     got no gnome desktop.
  5. When I choose a 'gnome fail safe' session, I get the message: 'no
     gnome distribution found.'

I would appreciate any assistance with this problem.
