strange nautilis behaviour with files

as can bee seen in the attached image my FC5 system has problems with
opening files,  but only for images, sound, videos and pdf files.  All
other file type open correctly, but for multimedia and pdf files I
have to select an application from a list.

Does any one know why this is happenenig and how to correct it?  I
assume in't not happening to every one and that it's not the expected
behaviour?
