I don't know the format with certainty, but an rpm does include a
header which I am fairly sure contains the file list. This is what
yum extracts when creating a repo and uses to return the information
when you use yum list|info|provides|whatprovides, etc.

I tried to quickly see if there was a way to get a simple file list
for a package but didn't locate any in the man page or in testing the
yum options that are offered as tab completable (by bash-completion's
yum configuration). I didn't do any googling nor any poking in the
yum source.

I wouldn't be surprised if yum had this ability already and it just
wasn't documented. If it's not there, I would bet it's probably not
hard to implement since all of the data required to do this is already
available to yum.

If no one chimes in and shows us how to do this, perhaps someone (the
OP? hint, hint :) would be interested in filing and RFE for yum to add
this feature?
