But it was the GPL that gave those authors the opportunity to see
the work in the first place!  If it had been some proprietary
license they wouldn't have even had the source code to look at or
try to fix.  It's the GPL that gave them that freedom in the first
place; they like everyone else have to respect the minor rules
that are attached to GPL code.  Their fixes etc have to be made
available so other authors can build on them and provide fixes too.

It's the GPL that gave that freedom, way more than any proprietary
license would give.   Why do you keep focusing on the minor 
restriction of the GPL and completely miss the benefits it offers?
