I seem to recall that earlier releases of Fedora -- FC1, FC2 -- had a
rather annoying default turned on that caused it on my computer: DNS --
if you did not have a DNS server configured, or the server could not be
reached, it would seem to hang for the longest time. 

This was just annoying compared to Solaris' habit of recording LINK DOWN
messages every time the network cable was not connected (I always like
to configure the Sun boxes before plugging into the network)
