xmms installation problem

hello everyone ,
i have tried to install xmms in my system through various ways but still
there is no sound coming.Moreover the filescannot be selected.the arent any
problems with the gui.But i think some extra packages need to be
installed.My soundcard is working properly.Anyone please help me.
