FC5 Gtk fonts -- not as nice as FC4?

Possibly.  The only difference that I've noticed is that Thunderbird now 
uses an odd font for some messages.  Do you know the name of the font 
you were using in FC4?  Is it installed?  I know that during the testing 
cycle, the Type1 font package wasn't installed, and that changed the 
default "monospace" font.
