I have an Intel 865G set to 1280 x 1024 and it works fine. I don't have
a super monitor and this setting is max for the display I use.
Did you check If the resolution under gnome-display-properties as the
console user is set to your desired resolution? This resolution setting
might be set to 1024x768 which would display regardless to your highest
setting in the xorg.conf file.
