I had the problem that text didn't appear on certain sites. I think what
fixed it was commenting out the line
       FontPath     "unix/:7100"
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xfs doesn't listen on this port any more), and make
sure you have the xorg-x11-fonts-truetype package installed (urw-fonts is
a good idea also).
