Well, color me blithering! It took me a bit of digging to find it even
knowing it was there, because I thought from the above that it must be in
/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-extras.repo -- but when I started systematically,
there it was in plain /etc/yum.conf. Probably put there when FC4 was brand
new, and I had been hitting dependency hell; and then, regretfully,
forgotten ...

Anyway, I got rid of it, and yum installed it. Many many thanks!
