How to disable yum update for some packages?

I got this from the HowTo install for FC3 (with speakup):

Because you're using a Linux kernel modified with Speakup, you need only to 
make certain that yum doesn't install a kernel that doesn't have Speakup on 
your computer. Edit the /etc/yum.conf file and insert the following line of 
text somewhere in the section labeled [main]:

exclude=kernel* kernel-doc kernel-source kernel-smp *debuginfo*
