How do I log out of the GUI?

that depends upon what is installed and which desktop manager you are
using but it seems always the bottom choice on the rightmost menu
starting at the left side...which might be the 3rd menu from the left -
I am on KDE now so I've forgotten what GNOME looks like or what it says.

I would agree that for new user clarity, multiple menu's can be
confusing.
