vmware - lost in a fog of ambiguity

I just acquired a very :wqnice if old ThinkPad running vmware (player),
which I have heard a lot about but never tried before.
I'm quite impressed with it,
but have been completely unable after a day reading vmware documentation
to get my WiFi card working.

The problem, if I understand it correctly,
is that there is an internal "virtual" network on 172.16.250.0
which I have to attach by a "virtual" switch to eth0.
But I have no idea how to set up this switch,
and none of the documents I have read tell me how to do this.
I have run vmware-config.pl (several times)
but none of the questions I am asked
seems relevant to my issue.

I wonder is some kind soul could either tell me what to do
(preferably the actual commands I should enter)
or else point me to some simple documentation on the subject.
