Cant raidstop on an md

Good morning list readers - 
 
Having some trouble with a raid1 device that someone else setup. Here is
what it SHOULD be doing:
 
partitions sda5 + sdb6 =  md0 as described in the raidtab, however, for
some reason when i cat /proc/mdstat i see:
 
md0 : active raid1 sdd2[1]
      143363840 blocks [2/1] [_U]
      
i unmount the respective mount, and try to issue the raidstop command
and receive:

[root at ag736 root]# raidstop /dev/md0
/dev/md0: Device or resource busy
 
and in dmesg
 
md: md0 still in use.
 
Now, i have googled, read a couple howtos, checked a few archives and
trying what i have found has NOT worked at all, i even removed the scsi
device that it says is in the raid device (ala echo "scsi
remove-single-device 0 00 03 00" > /proc/scsi/scsi) and to no avail. By
the way these raid devices were setup at install time when the device
sdd was NOT EVEN in the system - so i am very confused, but trying to
rebuild this raid device with the CORRECT partitions.
 
Anyone have any ideas how to "FORCE" the breakage of this raid device?
