You can maybe look at bit harder at where the problem comes from to get
some guidance.

 - Is eth0 up and asigned an IP if you do

ifconfig

 - do you get your IP over DHCP or static assigned?

 - what does

 mii-tool eth0

say if anything

 - Check /var/log/messages for relevant messages
