  I think it is. Can you access your logs.
  See if the any logs are available or not. If it is a good hacker, he will clean all the logs.
  /var/log/secure will give the IPS that are last logged in.
  /var/log/wtmp look for  an IP in this. 
  Also /var/log/messages
