when it stalls, there should be a big clue in the console...

can you <Control><Alt><F4>  and see if there are errors in the console?

I think it is F4, you can try F3 and F5 just in case I've forgotten (and
I've forgotten lots).

to get back to GUI screen...press <Alt><F7>
