There are ongoing problems with scanners.

You might like to take a look at this bug

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=149027

and see if anything in it relates to your 
problem. I think you should look at comment #8.

If you or anybody else can run dump files on 
machines that won't talk to Epson scanners as 
requested in the bug that would be great.
