Got the .htaccess issue resolved as well. I had omitted to enter the
<Directory /var/www/html/mysite> portion in the httpd.conf file. So
that meant I had also not specified the AllowOverride option. I added
that and included AllowOverride AuthConfig for that particular
directory entry and it now works. I also since noticed a posting on
this same issue by someone else where it was pointed out there that
that the likely issue was the AllowOverride. Wish I had seen that
posting 2 days ago. Oh well luckily it wasn't critical but rather
playing around with access control.
