I know that one is supposed to provide 32-bit versions and the other 
64-bit versions.  My mistake was looking in /usr/lib for libstdc++.so.5 
rather than /usr/lib64 after installing the 64-bit libraries so I 
thought that it hadn't been installed.  My bad.
