   I only did a 'cat /proc/mdstat' after I had managed to get the
md devices mounted by creating them in mdadm. I definitely did
change the partition id to 'fd' with...

/sbin/parted /dev/hde set 1 raid on
/sbin/parted /dev/hde set 2 raid on
/sbin/parted /dev/hde set 3 raid on
/sbin/parted /dev/hde set 5 raid on
/sbin/parted /dev/hde set 6 raid on

I assumed I didn't have to turn any flags off with
parted when I did this.
