newbie: howto install mplayer codecs

Doesn't this leave you with two copies of the codec files, one under
/usr/local and one under /usr.  Why do you want that?

There are codec rpms on the mplayer site that can save you this trouble.

Follow the link on the left side where it says "CVS" versions. On my
system, I'm running:

$ rpm -qa | grep mplayer
mplayer-gui-1.0pre7-1

mplayer-codecs-20050412-1
mplayer-1.0pre7-1
mplayer-codecs-extra-20050412-1
mplayer-font-iso1-1.1-1
mplayer-skin-default-1.4-1

The codec rpm drops the codec files into:

/usr/lib/codecs

I also have this related one from a separate site

mplayerplug-in-3.11-fc4

The mplayer-plugin is a big help, because if you have it, most of the
commercial streaming video sites will work. I watched CBS NCAA
basketball the last two weekends on cbs.com.
